It’s been, yet again, another long period of blog inactivity for the Bjorkestra. And for that matter, gig inactivity. There are some new things in the works, especially since I recently relocated to the Bay Area. I hope to have more interesting news soon!!!
In the meantime, enjoy this, your “Daily Bjork” if you will:
I’ve got the entire band together for the Blue Note Jazz Festival at The Highline Ballroom! Shayna Steele will be returning to the vocal chair, after nearly a 2 year hiatus while she was touring with Rihanna and having a baby! Also, we have several new faces in the group, as well as many returning members:
Saxophones: Travis Sullivan, Jon Gordon, Sean Nowell, Russ Nolan, Lauren Sevian
Trumpets: Kevin Bryan, Ravi Best, Eli Asher, John Bailey
Trombones: Alan Ferber, Jeff Fairbanks, Shannon Barnett, Max Seigel
Art Hirahara, piano
Yoshi Waki, bass
Joe Abbatantuono, drums
Ian Cook, laptop
This is gonna be killin’. With killin’ players who’ll be playing killin’ solos on killin’ arrangements.

I’m happy to say that we’re going to back with the full 18 piece band in June for the Blue Note Jazz Festival at The Highline Ballroom. This will be our first show in the US with the full band in over 3 years (the last time was the Big Band Bonanza at The Bell House in Brooklyn in October 2009). This show has gotten me very excited and reinvigorated about the group, and I’ve started writing a new arrangement on “Earth Intruders,” and I’m hoping I can do this crazy ass tune some arranging justice. I’ve also had some ideas on “Where is the Line With You” and to possibly reorchestrate “Play Dead” from a 12 to 18 piece band version.
Please save the date! Sunday June 9 at The Highline Ballroom. More details to follow!
The Bjorkestra continues its monthly residency at ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn on May 11, which will include a performance and a special treat before the concert: The Bjorkestra’s bandleader Travis Sullivan and Bjorkestra laptop programmer Ian Cook will present and hour long workshop in which they will discuss how computer hardware and software have been essential components in the evolution of the Bjorkestra, and demonstrate their approach to merging the electronic side of Bjork’s music with acoustic jazz in a live performance setting. It’s sure to be fun and informative!
Friday May 11!
Bjorkestra laptop workshop – 7pm
Bjorkestra performance – Sets at 8pm & 9pm
